We looked around at a lot of hotels, apartments and guesthouses in Pattaya before finding this little gem down a side street - brand new, free WiFi in room and on the edge of the tourist area - a short stroll, but far enough to be away from the noise of the city.

The Cantina is a 15-20 room hotel with a very reasonably priced Mexican restaurant on the ground floor. There are three sized rooms - small, medium and large. The large room was double the price above, but big enough to play football in and had a balcony. The medium room was also fairly big, but the smallest was big enough for us. Montly rates are much, much better than nightly rates.

There was effective air conditioning, an in-room safe, a fridge and a handful of satellite channels on the TV. The windows opened, but only some of the rooms have fly screens and unfortunately ours didn't which meant we had to use the air con more than we wanted.

The rooms were spotlessly clean with fast (and stable) WiFi and the bed and pillows very comfortable.

The location is great. Maybe 10 minutes walk to the main tourist area on the beach, but only a couple of minutes walk gets you to what is the beginning of what is an endless array of bars, restaurants, shops and massage parlors. There are convenience stores and local mini marts all around and a fantastic night food court type market about 10 minutes walk in the opposite direction. Walking up Buddha Hill, which you can see from the hotel is well worth the effort for the peace, tranquility and clean air at the top - not to mention the view. Keep walking and you eventually get to Jomtien beach, but it takes a (very) good couple of hours each way.

Perhaps the best thing about the Cantina is the staff. They are incredibly helpful and friendly.

Next time we're passing through Pattaya, we will definitely be staying here - highly recommended.
